What is Women's Health?

Women's Health is a specialized area of Physical Therapy that addresses dysfunctions unique to women. The primary areas currently addressed include treatment of Urinary Incontinence and Breast Rehabilitation. Urinary Incontinence refers to the leakage of urine at inappropriate times.

Physical Therapy Can:
Give you control over your life and your bladder
Save money and embarrassment by allowing less use of pads and undergarments
Reduce use of medications for incontinence
Possibly prevent the need for surgery

Women's Health and Breast Rehabilitation

Breast rehabilitation is treatment aimed at post-operative recovery of function and scar tissue remodeling for the purpose of minimizing adhesions, improving shoulder and neck function, limiting secondary biomechanical dysfunction in the shoulder and neck, and improving prosthesis fit/comfort in the case of mastectomy.

How can physical therapy help?

Education on diet and nutrition to avoid food and drinks that may irritate the bladder
Advice on how to change behaviors that make symptoms worse
Techniques to help you find the right muscles and learn to use them correctly
Pelvic floor exercises to strengthen the pelvic and core muscles
Exercises to stretch and strengthen other important muscles
Training to decrease urinary urge and frequency
Biofeedback that shows you how your muscles are working
